President’s Message

April 2022

Happy Spring Everyone.

After a very long and cold winter, spring is finally in the air.  Snow almost all gone, plants are beginning to sprout in the gardens and there is a good feeling as our spirits embrace the finer weather.  We also have hope that we will be able to soon return to some of our usual pastimes as restrictions begin to lift.  We still need to be very cautious but a sense of freedom is on the horizon.  It has been encouraging to see many of the activities begin once again at the Kanata Seniors Centre.  Be sure to check out their website for a listing of available activities. kanataseniorscentre.ca

We would like to welcome Mark Savard as a new Board member.  Thanks for becoming part of our team and look forward to working together.  We are looking for additional board members.  If you are interested in serving your senior community in such a role, please contact myself and we could discuss the expectations and duties of being part of this vital Board.  ked.dubie@sympatico.ca . Everyone is welcome to observe our Board meetings which are held on the third Friday morning of each month at 9am at the Kanata Seniors Centre.

As you are aware, in the last two years we have not been able to have an Annual General Meeting due to Covid-19 limitations.  We are in the process of planning an AGM for next Sept.  There are a few issues that need to be brought to the attention of our membership.  There are some proposed amendments to our Articles of Continuance and By-Laws that will need to be voted on. These proposals can be found on our website in the About Us section at www.kanataseniors.ca

Your Council board has been at work planning to get back into the swing of things.  We have the Café up and running, 5 days a week 9am to 3 pm.  Plans are in the offing to begin to serve our hot entrées at noon possibly starting June. Presently we serve soup, sandwiches, desserts and beverages each day at very moderate costs.  The Café is also looking for volunteer cooks and café workers.  We are looking for cooks to work one day a week 9am-12:30pm , to prepare a hot entrée for the lunch crowd. There are a variety of shifts needed for café workers. If you are interested in either of these positions, please contact Frank Zeitlhoffer  613-580-2980 or zetlhofferfrank@gmailcom.

We have been busy planning new activities for members.  Our Travel & Lifestyles team has planned several events in the coming months.  I’m sure there is something of interest for everyone. All of these are being held at the Kanata Seniors Centre. All are presented at no charge

Travel Fair: Sat. April 23, 2022 1pm to 3pm, in multiple Halls.

Beauty Day Seminar, presented by Shoppers’ Drug Mart: Fri. May 13, 2022 10am, Hall C.

CAA seminar on auto travel in Ontario/Canada:  Fri June 10, 2022, Hall C.

Clean-up Campaign. Our Board members have also registered to be part of the City of Ottawa cleanup campaign. We will be cleaning the area surrounding the Kanata Seniors Centre building on May 13, 2022 from 10am to 12pm.  A rain date is set up for May 16, same time/place.  If anyone feels the need to help us out it would be much appreciated.  Bags and gloves will be provided, as well as coffee and muffins afterward.  We will meet at the front doors to the Kanata Seniors Centre.

I hope you feel the joy that I do with the longer days, sunshine, flowers and birds.  Life is what we make of it.  Let’s make it the best we can.

Stay safe, but have some fun.

Kay Dubie,

President, Kanata Seniors Council
